In light of Fashion Week in NYC, I thought it was fitting to post the second half of my Thanksgiving in New York post. If you didn’t get to read the first half you can do so here.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is another New York City tradition that is a must see in late November. Although the show has a Christmas theme, this musical will get anyone into the festive spirit. The show begins early November and runs through to New Years Eve.
In November, one of the cities most favourite relaxation spots, Bryant Park, is completely transformed. In stead of the huge grass area used by office workers during the summer to relax and eat their lunch in the sunshine, Bryant Park is almost unrecognisable come late October, as the grass is replaced with a huge ice skating arena known as Citi Pond. Skating at Citi Pond is a great idea if ice skating in NYC is on your agenda, as the lines aren’t as long as in Central Park or Rockefeller Plaza. Admission is free, but you have to pay for skate rentals ($14) unless you have bought your own!
A walk up to 5th Avenue is a must, where like Bryant Park, the Rockefeller Plaza opens up its renowned ice skating arena. The famous Rockefeller Christmas tree will be in place, however the tree lighting ceremony is not until late November (in 2012 it was lit on the 28th), which is also well worth seeing. A stroll from the Rockefeller Plaza up 5th Avenue is a must to take in all of the Christmas decorations and luxury stores such as Cartier and Tiffany and Co.
Another great thing about visiting in November is that most of the autumn foliage is in full swing, so a visit to Central Park is a must to see the different array of colours. As an Australian growing up surrounded by gum trees and evergreens, I was amazed that so many trees could create so many different colours.
